How to select the perfect gift (+ WORKSHEET!)

Around this time of year, I struggle with what gift to give to others.

In a world where access to all the things is easier than ever before, I try not to choose gifts out of last-minute desperation. I've been guilty of that in the past, and even though gift cards are fantastic, I gave way too many of them when I didn't want to put energy into figuring out what to get.

This year I wanted to creatively solve this dilemma and make it come from a more mindful place. What's the point if every year we mechanically buy things just because we should?

I decided that my gift selection will come from a more strong, grounded base, one that will guide me in making more of a deep impact on the recipient.

This year, I choose Compassion.

Merriam-Webster defines Compassion as sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it.

Here's the concept:

With compassion as my criteria, I am consciously thinking of what the other person is struggling with and select my gift based on how I can make them feel better and assist in alleviating their struggle.

For example, if someone is struggling with a lot of stress and anxiety, I'd want them to feel relaxed and enhance their well-being. My gift would be something that would reflect those emotions.

Your gift doesn't have to be a physical thing you purchase. It can be a planned experience, or it can be a list of useful resources and information that you can provide to someone.

The key is to remember the feeling you want to make your recipient experience and what part of their struggle you'll alleviate if you do.

I created a simple guide/worksheet for you with a list of emotions to better help you in figuring out exactly what you want the other person to feel and make your selection process a little more unique.

In hoping that this will reduce your gift-giving anxiety this holiday season, along with making your presents a smashing success, this is my tiny compassionate gift to you :)
